Six Years Without His Daughters: How Andorran Bureaucracy Destroyed a Family
Sean Ambrose McCarthy, aged 83, has spent years separated from his daughters after an institutional intervention that, according to his defence, transformed a temporary protective measure into an almost irreversible family disappearance.
This podcast reconstructs the case through court decisions, social-service reports, psychological and psychiatric assessments, appeals, and submissions filed by lawyer Emili Campos Arauz. It examines language barriers, assessments allegedly produced without proper interviews, the repeated circulation of unverified claims, the failure of supervised contact, and the way Sean’s anger and protest were later treated as further evidence against him.
The investigation also confronts Sean’s own mistakes: damaging communications, inflammatory language, and his refusal to cooperate with certain services. The central question is not whether he was a perfect father, but whether those failures justified erasing him from his daughters’ lives for years.
In 2025, several UK specialists found no cognitive impairment, major mental illness, or narcissistic personality disorder, while an independent social worker proposed a gradual, supervised and child-led reunification plan. The unanswered question remains: what did the Andorran courts do with that new evidence?
A severe investigation into the courts, social services and the Government of Andorra—and into how a bureaucracy can destroy a family without any institution accepting responsibility for the whole wreckage.
